Elaine Abrams is a Professor of Epidemiology and Pediatrics at Columbia University with over 35 years of experience in the prevention and treatment of HIV infection and associated infectious diseases in pregnant women, children, and their families. Dr. Abrams has chaired the WHO consolidated guidelines for the use of antiretroviral drugs since 2015 and is also co-chair of the WHO Pediatric Antiretroviral Working Group. Her research interests focus on maternal-child health, mother-to-child HIV transmission, the natural history of pediatric HIV, and optimizing therapy.

At the completion of this educational session, learners will:

  • Recognize global progress in the prevention of new pediatric HIV infections.
  • Identify optimal antiretroviral regimens for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Describe gaps along the cascade of care for the prevention of vertical HIV transmission.
  • Describe the impact of the SARS-CoV2 pandemic on HIV services for pregnant women and infants.
