About the Presenter:Top of page

Dr. Chaturvedi is a Senior Investigator and Senior Advisor for Faculty Development, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, US National Cancer Institute. Dr. Chaturvedi’s research program addresses the molecular epidemiology of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancers and oral cavity cancers. His research spans etiology, natural history, biomarkers, risk stratification, screening, and prevention of these cancers. Dr. Chaturvedi’s work has shown HPV infection as the cause of recent increases in oropharyngeal cancer incidence in the United States, characterized the epidemiology of oral HPV infection and HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer in the US population, and evaluated the population-level efficacy of HPV vaccines for prevention of these cancers. His current work is characterizing optimal age limits for HPV vaccination of US men and the potential utility of screening for early detection of HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers. Dr. Chaturvedi’s research on oral cavity cancers aims to characterize oral carcinogenesis at the macroscopic, microscopic, molecular/genomic, and microbiomic levels to inform secondary prevention and early detection. His work addresses foundational questions pertaining to oral cavity cancer screening—who to screen, how to conduct screening, how to clinically manage screen-positive individuals, and if and how population-wide screening could be implemented. With collaborators in Taiwan, India, and the United States, Dr. Chaturvedi has conducted comprehensive molecular epidemiologic studies to characterize the natural history of oral precancer, screening modalities for oral precancer/cancer, and risk stratification tools for triage of individuals for screening and clinical management.

Dr. Scott Roof serves as the Director of Clinical Research and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. As a clinician, Dr. Roof treats patients with head and neck cancer, ranging from thyroid cancer, to larynx cancer, to HPV-associated Oropharynx Cancer, which is the focus of his talk. In his role as Director of Clinical Research, Dr. Roof leads a comprehensive clinical research program focused on advancing head and neck oncology, with a particular emphasis on innovations in microvascular surgery and the use of circulating tumor DNA, or liquid biopsies, for the treatment of HPV-associated cancers. His work is widely published in high-impact journals, covering breakthroughs in surgical techniques and novel treatment adaptations, including studies that inform and refine clinical guidelines for HPV-associated oropharyngeal carcinoma. As dedicated educator, he also mentors’ medical students and residents, guiding the next generation of clinicians and researchers through rigorous training in surgery and clinical research.
