The 22nd International AIDS Conference was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from July 23-27, 2018. This conference, the largest conference on any global health issue in the world, was attended by more than 18,000 people from 160 countries. In all, were more than 3000 abstracts from more than 100 countries were presented in addition to hundreds of plenary sessions, symposia and panel discussions.
With an estimated 1.8 million new HIV infections globally in 2017, there was widespread agreement at AIDS 2018 that the current pace of scale up for proven infection initiatives is too slow to reach the global 2030 target to End the Epidemic. PrEP, Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U), and vaccine trials were major discussion topics. At the same time, there was a sharp focus on the needs and engagement of young people, women and marginalized populations.
