Health Department: One-Fourth of New York City Residents Have Herpes Virus

According to a study released Monday by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, about 26 percent of adults in the city have genital herpes. Nationwide, the virus infects 19 percent of adults. Among New Yorkers, the most affected populations are women, African Americans and gay men. The department notes that its STD clinics offer free testing for herpes, and it advocates consistent and correct use of condoms. Infection with genital herpes can double a person's chance of contracting HIV. For more information, visit http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/pr2008/pr039-08.shtml.
